Gets its name (and inspiration) from Smithsonian Folkways FA2028: “Get On Board: Negro Folksongs By The Folkmasters” – which you can still get as a digital download or custom CD.

When you’re young, you might come across something that opens up your mind to mysteries and possibilities . . . . in this particular case, it was a Folkways 10″ LP, called Get On Board, by the Folk Masters, featuring Brownie McGhee, Sonny Terry, and the elusive Coyal McMahan.

My copy is a 2019 reissue on what is now called Smithsonian Folkways (the Smithsonian acquired Folkways in 1987 from the estate of Moses Asch).

This was Williams’ sophomore album, after Ramblin’ On My Mind. I didn’t come to know Wiliams until much later – Car Wheels on a Gravel Road in the late nineties – but have been going back to the earlier records whenever I can find them.
