This was Sturgill’s solo debut, self-funded and produced by Dave Cobb, with an outlaw country feel and some Nashville session players like Hargus “Pig” Robbins on keys and Robby Turner and Leroy Powell on Steel Guitar. Tremendous debut and auspicious of good things to come.

My copy is the Vinyl Me Please 10th anniversary reissue in 2023 on “coke bottle clear” vinyl, which sounds great. They actually originally sent out copies on 140g vinyl and then sent 180g replacements in a generic sleeve – but both sounded just fine to me.

Love the songwriting on this album:

Well, I’ve been spending all my money on weed n’ pills / Tryin’ to write a song that’ll pay the bills / But it ain’t came yet, so I guess I’ll have to rob a bank . . .

Well, every time the wife talks, a baby gets mentioned / I’m so broke I can’t pay attention . . .

Well, they call me King Turd up here on Shit Mountain / If you want it you can have the crown

You can have the crown
