Doug Sahm’s quite an interesting figure I knew little about until Vinyl Me Please introduced me to this LP. He was a founding member of the Sir Douglas Quintet (formed in San Antonio but named to suggest they were part of the British invasion, like The Buckinghams), who moved out to California and were part of the psychedelic scene in the later 60s. He then relocated to Austin in the early 70s. He was on Willie Nelson’s Shotgun Willie and some Grateful Dead recording sessions in the early 70s, as well as issuing two solo records.
This record was recorded at Cosmo’s Factory with Stu Cook and Doug Clifford (From Creedence Clearwater Revival). The artwork is by Kerry (Fitzgerald) Awn, a fellow Austin Texas singer songwriter. (Sahm was from San Antonio, but found his groove in Austin).
My copy is a Vinyl Me Please reissue from 2022, one of the early VMP Country releases (CW014).
