Neil Young, Landing on Water, 1986 on Geffen

Album cover - detail of an airplane safety brochure showing how to evacuate in a water landing

This is the album that led Geffen records to sue Young for making something not representative of his sound, in favor of 80s synthesizers and synclavier, working with Danny Kortchmar (who shared producer credit) and Steve Jordan.

It’s been pretty harshly reviewed over the years—including by Young himself—but I actually kind of dig it. It’s got a real time and place, and there’s no real mistaking it for anyone else or any other Neil Young album.

My copy—via Fly Vintage in Robbinsdale MN—is a Specialty pressing (you can really see the E A S T around the spindle hole on side 2).
