The full title is: When The Pawn Hits The Conflicts He Thinks Like A King What He Knows Throws The Blows When He Goes To The Fight And He’ll Win The Whole Thing ‘Fore He Enters The Ring There’s No Body To Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand And Remember That Depth Is The Greatest Of Heights And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where To Land And If You Fall It Won’t Matter, Cuz You’ll Know That You’re Right.
That line “depth is the greatest of heights” could be a great LP title in its own right. The title came from a poem Apple wrote, reportedly in response to fan reactions to a Spin cover story.
Apple’s sophomore album after Tidal, produced by Jon Brion who’d also worked with Aimee Mann and Eels (among others).
My copy is the 2021 Vinyl Me Please reissue with alternate artwork (the original cover was the title superimposed over Apple’s face) which is a wonderful pressing as you’d expect.
